You will be reminded of fairy tales when walking around Copenhagen, our beautiful capital city, dating back from medieval times, or when visiting one of the castles you will find in generous numbers all over the country. Old is one of the key words when describing Denmark. Medieval churches next to ancient villages. Towns dating back from around 900. As you may know we also have the world’s oldest monarchy. Queen Margrethe II is the Head of State and the Royal Family is very popular. First in the line of Danish monarchs was Gorm the Old, who died around 940 when Danes were known and feared as the Vikings.
You may have heard about King Kanut who in 1013-1035 reigned over England. Another well known monarch was King Christian IV (1588-1648) who was a passionate builder and certainly has left his mark on the capital with many remarkable buildings still to be enjoyed. Denmark is a country of islands and lakes. The peninsula of Jylland is anchored to the European mainland, but otherwise Denmark is comprised of a total of 406 green islands. The total coastline is 7,300 km! Not bad for a small country with a population of around 5,1 million. Denmark is visited and enjoyed by a vast number of tourists during the summer months.
